I exhibited “Ideogenetic Machine” at the Centre Pompidou in Paris as part of an exhibition titled “Love”. “Love” draws inspiration from US artist Robert Indiana’s iconic sculpture and brings together contemporary artists who use technology to create highly participatory artworks. The exhibition took place from October 19th to November 3rd in 2013.
The curator of the exhibition asked if I would be interested in collaborating with an independent comic artist collective based in China called Special Comix (SC), whose work he has shown previously at the Centre Pompidou. After many discussions, 10 artists from SC were invited to create their own special editions for “Ideogenetic Machine” as part of the exhibition. This was an experiment for both Special Comix and me. I was particularly excited to collaborate with a group of artist whose work reflect recent cultural changes in China. My conversations with SC have sparked several new ideas for developing the project. The installation was shown simultaneously at the Centre Pompidou and in Nanjing, at the Art Museum of Nanjing University of The Arts as part of an exhibition/conference called “Beyond the Frame”.
