I am building a kinetic maze that consists of modular elements with rotating arms. A software program will continuously generate new maze patterns to form new pathways for the audience to follow. I’ve been scraping the sidewalks of Brooklyn for moss samples, which will be grown in the rotating arms. I became excited about the idea of creating a “garden” that is also a machine while at Wave Hill.
Since each element in the maze is modular, the system can be infinitely expanded. I hope the maze will eventually be deployed in urban spaces. In my imagination it fills a town square somewhere, so the inhabitants of the town wake up each morning to find a new maze waiting for them to explore.
